A Table Set Forever

There is a new display in the library at Northampton High School.  “A Table Set for Forever,” a portable, multi-media installation piece is a sort of transplantable room made up of several artistic components.
The center of the work is a table whose surface is covered in a garden-themed mosaic composed of bits of broken plates and glass.Around the table are six chairs that are painted as blackboards, on which viewers are encouraged to write their own questions concerning the sustainability of the environment. Surrounding the table and chairs are six panels made of seed packets that are sewn together and covered in a collage of photographs and painted text from relevant literature and answers to frequently asked questions. The work is also going to include an audio piece, made from collected fragments of conversations about sustainability that were held in the “room.”
The artist who made the display, Jane Beatrice Wegscheider, was the winner of the 2008 Pioneer Valley Sustainability Network’s “Art of Sustainability” contest. She believes that the ability to share ideas, particularly from person to person, is essential to sustainable activism. The work of art is going to be on display in the library until the beginning of February.
