Throughout the Pioneer Valley, environmentally aware citizens participate in a week of biking each year. The goal is for the participants to commute only by bike for a week, raising awareness to help the environment by reducing the use of fuel.

For the first time, Northampton High School participated in the full week of this event, with students biking a total of 781. 4 miles. Science teacher Dan Moylan helped to raise awareness of the importance of conserving energy through biking Week.

“Our goal of Bike commute week at the High School was to encourage people, students and teachers, to bike to school,” said Moylan. “I think it went well, teachers and kids volunteered to make some sort of baked goods, so students were rewarded each day for biking.”

Moylan explained that bikers were also given a raffle ticket each day that they biked and three students won cash prizes (juniors Stella Cilman and Jasmine Landry and freshman John Johnson) and if a student biked all five days they received a free Friendly’s ice cream.

“It’s really easy; it’s a fun thing to do, just bike to school!” said president of the Environmental Club and sophomore Nick Pray.
