NHS’ annual poetry slam will be held here at NHS on December 16th. Requirements for slamming are that the poem must be original and can be no longer than 3 minutes. Prizes will be awarded by a panel. The first place winner has traditionally received a $100 prize; second place receives $50; and third place receives $25. Due to the school’s limited budget, the fi rst place prize may only be $75 this year. Ms. Strauss has seen about 10 poems so far and expects to have about 50 to 60 participants. One year there were 75 slammers, the highest NHS has ever seen. Four poets will come to NHS to slam their poems and hold workshops for students on December 2. The NHS Poetry Slam was started by English teachers Heather Drucker-Brown and Suzanne Strauss in 1998. NHS alum Christian Drake won first place in the very first poetry slam. Drake went on to graduate from college as a national
slam champion. Ms. Strauss invites all students to submit their poems to her in room 303 and urges them to attend the December 2nd workshops.
